This elegaant incense burner came from a Portland, Oregon estate 30 years ago. The piece is likely pre 1900. The dragon-like animal on the lid of this 19th Century incense burner is the Kefin. It is the emblem of perfect good, and is a composite animal both male and female. Considered a Chinese unicorn, it has a dragon's head, deer hoofs, a bushy tail and flaming shoulders. It is considered one of the four supernatural creatures along with the Phoenix (the handles), which is the emblem of the Empress, having the head of a pheasant, a long neck, a swallow's beak and a many-colored plumage. It measures 3 1/2 x 8 1/2 x 7" high.
